Is it really the projectionist's fault????

Phillip Martin, of the Arkansas Democract-Gazette, one of the most annoying entertainment writers in Arkansas says,

"First of all, whenever the boom microphone is visible at the top of the frame, its probably not the fault of the filmmakers but a framing error committed by the local theater projectionist. All film arrives at the theater needing to be blocked and matted sound booms would be visible in almost every movie if the projectionist did nothing but load the film into the projector. At the top of the frame as seen by the camera is a "safe" area where boom microphones and other equipment may operate. (Thats the reason movie camera viewfinders are marked with rectangles showing the frame.)(Martin, 2005)"

Has Phil done his homework? I'd be interested to know.

I dunno...but the projectionist is only responsible for the boom mike being visible if the movie is clearly out of frame--that means, there's a lot of head space. This ONLY happens when a movie is projected in FLAT, which sadly, yes, some projectionists do not know how to frame properly.

If he's talking, in general, then no, it's not the projectionist's fault. Boom mikes are visible on video tapes and DVDs, which are technically "framed" properly, so it's not the projectionist's fault in all or probably even most cases. It really depends on what kind of theatre--there ARE a lot of dumb projectionists out there. To blanketly blame is wrong, though.

Indeed...J...the one thing I regret about tonight's reunion is not being able to talk in depth to every single person...but, it was good seein' ya'.

Anyway, I'll take this time to also reinterate that blaming projectionists blindly like this dude is totally wrong. You can talk about this problem on a case-by-case basis, but not on every case. What a retard.
