Mr. Thompson

I don't want to elaborate this too much, out of respect for the recently dead. But, as much as Hunter S. Thompson could be fun to read, I can only assume that he was a very unhappy man. I think many of the breathless eulogies are very tough to read in this light.

And sorry about the lack of posts the last few days. I've been very busy and traveling a bit.

Yeah, well people who are happy don't spend significant amounts of time trashed out of their gourds on drugs and alcohol.

While I enjoyed various writings of Mr. Thompson...I think it's clear that he was not only unhappy, but also very selfish.

I think the rampant drug use (and subsequent glamourizing of that drug use) is a fairly selfish act...and there may be no more selfish act than suicide.

I think it's interesting that someone so talented would think so little of himself as to both feel the need for psychadelic escape from himself and the need for suicide.

I think the more a person respects and values and enjoys the lives and goals of others, the happier they become. The more they focus on their own shortcomings (or successes) the more lonely and unhappy they become. Is it possible that only the truly selfless can be truly happy?

I think that KW pretty much nailed it on the head. The more we care for others, the happy we will be.
