Fair Catch Kick

The EC beat me to talking about the fair catch kick, which should be known by every NFL coach. Good job by Fischer in knowing the rule and using it properly. I can add this story that I found on the Packers website. Lombardi knew and used the rule to beat the Bears, only to have them return the favor a few years later. I don't think anyone knows how many times the fair catch kick has been used in the NFL. Here's information on its origin.

OK, now I'm embarrassed that I didn't find the Lombardi story. Nice. I do take some umbrage with Wikipedia's definition, the last line in particular. While the NFL rule book does not call it a free kick (which is a term reserved for the kickoff aftera safety), the corresponding Rugby rule is called a free kick. Some Wiki editor was trying to show off, methinks.

But close enough.

I was at work watching the game in my "secret" alcove. I was starting some movies, then returned, and saw the setup. I turned to one of the other guys working and asked, "Is this the fair catch free kick?" The guy didn't know. I'd always wanted to see that. Too bad he missed.
