A Salvo From Pixar
The latest trailer for Cars, the new Pixar feature coming out June 9 next year, seems to be giving the slightest bit of good-natured ribbing towards their competitors in a medium that is going to crowd the marketplace next year.
In the new trailer, designed like a car commercial, it notes that "We could boast about constructing the world's most technologically advanced automobiles, or brag that we've received more awards than any other manufacturer...we could gloat, tease, and flaunt all day...but we don't have to, because our cars speak for themselves." You could just as easily insert "animated films" for every occurrence of "automobile" or "car" and it definitely seems as if they are making that very point, especially when they say, "From the manufacturers of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles." That, in a very subtle way, throws a barb at all the other studios trying to make their mark. This trailer proves that Pixar, with their attention to detail, still kicks everybody else's butt in this medium.
There's at least 7 coming out next year--Ice Age 2, Over the Hedge, Cars, Barnyard, Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and probably more (Cat Tale and Foodfight are the only ones I haven't seen trailers for, and would make the total 9).

I agree with you that Pixar is miles ahead of any other company in the animation department, but am I the only one that thinks "Cars" looks a little under par.
If you see the new trailer, I think it looks just as good as the others, but maybe you have seen it. Anyway, with original TOY STORY director John Lasseter doing this, I think it's going to be great.
Hope so; just saw the new trailer online; was going off original trailer, and things I've read about it. That does make it look quite a bit better. I do hope it's good; it's nice to have something as reliable as Pixar around.
Chris and I were recently talking about this Pixar vs. Everyone Else debate (after his post, but before I'd seen it) and one point I want to make is this: Pixar doesn't just make great computer animated films. They make great films...period. As a "studio" they've made six films (both Toy Storys, Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Incredibles)...and all of them are--even at worst--are 'A' movies...probably more like A-plus movies. Six films...six hits. Six films...six critically acclaimed pictures. Six films...six mega-blockbusters.
No other studio in the world, no other studio in history can boast this kind of track record.
Watch any of their DVDs that have behind-the-scenes documentaries...and you'll clearly see that the number one thing to them is story. Story is king with Pixar...and it clearly shows.
Any other studios that come out with computer animated films that don't have story as their number one priority....are bound to fail in the long-term. I have no doubt that in thirty years Finding Nemo will still be a classic film, where Shrek 2 will simply be a movie that made tons of cash.
In Pixar I trust. Cars will be good.
