Unfortunately, the same thing happened to Smarty Jones. Remember in his earlier races, he was held back a little until the end, where he blew by everyone. This time, Smarty Jones was ahead for a lot of the race and most of the stretch, and you could see he just didn't have it anymore once Birdstone made his move. I think that Triple Crown thing got to their head a little.
