All Right, Everyone, Let's Make A Big Deal

The White Sox get the benefit of a call in Game 2 of the ALCS and its tied going back to Anaheim. Let the overblown controversy begin! I am going to counter all of this nonsense...because I like to be the voice of dissent? No, the voice of reason, dammit.

1. The umpire blew the call. That isn't a question according to replay and what was said afterwards, where the umpire called strike three and decided that the batter was out. All anyone asks is for consistency and if you made a call, you need to stick with it unless there's someone on your crew that can support a change. So, there's my two cents on what practically everyone is going to cry about in the next day or so.

2. However, in a playoff game, you don't leave anything to chance. If it's borderline, you need to tag the runner or throw to first base. Stop acting like you know everything in the heat of the moment. That ball was too close to the ground not to make sure. The catcher, in effect, blew the play. This is like running out all of your contact plays or making a defensive catch that might be construed as a trapped ball. You just make sure.

3. It's freaking game 2. If the Angels lose this series because of that one play, where the series is merely tied, they have bigger problems than one blown call.

All right, I'm finished.

Yeah, freaking tag the guy. You see that all the time, playoffs or not.

I'm with you.

I haven't played baseball since I was 15, but even then we all knew (not just the catchers) that it is always wise to tag a guy who strikes out, even when you're fairly sure you didn't drop the ball.

Mostly, it disturbs me to see yet another example of rich athletes playing the blame game. Well, analysts and fans are doing it too. But this reminds me of the recent Ravens game, where players afterwards were talking about the refs having it in for them. Sheesh.

Close calls have always got to go to one of the teams, so there is no use bitching about it later. And like Chris said, it's game 2 for Christ sakes, and they're about to go home for three games. I think they'll be alright. But everyone always wants to have a turning point in a series; it was the fan interference with the Cubs/Marlins, and if the Whitesox win this series, you can know for certain this will be mentioned many times afterwards.
