Gambling

The difference between European and American views of sports gambling is pretty interesting. While much of the popularity of the NFL is based on the ability to gamble on games, the football powers that be do not speak of it without exception. In contrast, I just saw an English soccer highlight, with the odds on the home team's next game listed on an advert two yards from the field. Just noting.

" He's an Oscar lock. Jake Gyllenhaal, also in his third movie of the year (after Proof and Jarhead) deserves as much consideration. Michelle Williams has been getting Oscar buzz, and Anne Hathaway has an outside shot even though she's not in it as much as the others. All of the actors, but especially all four leads, do their best work here."

But is the oscar simply because of the subject? As in, they've never done a movie like this before so the oddity alone makes it outstanding. Or is it because these are actually great performances that carry through despite/regardless of what the film is about?

I'm not critisizing your review. I thought it was very informative. In fact, despite my rather "conservative" religious views, I am slightly tempted to see this because it does look interesting.
I'm just wondering if there's a distinction.
