Red Sox Bury the Dead

Indeed, isn't this what sports are all about? That perennial loser finally makes it and wins one? Now Chicago alone has the only two teams that have been waiting nearly a century for a winner. Boston has done what they have begged for throughout the years--and they did it against the franchises that caused them so much pain. First the Yankees, for what may be the true World Series this year, doing the impossible in winning 4 straight from them after being so lifeless, then drilling the no-chance Cardinals, a franchise that won 2 of the 4 Sox Series.

Yes, that was easy. That was the way they needed to do it. On the all-time list of World Series, this ranks nearly last as far as in-game drama--it ranks right down there with the 1998 Yankees over Padres sweep and the following year's Yankees over Braves sweep, but what ultimately makes this World Series special is the winner. An entire town can no longer fear curses, humiliation, and all of the goats of the past have been forgiven. If anything, this should be a lesson to the Cubs and White Sox fans...doesn't the Red Sox win break their respective curses, too? Do we even believe in that anymore? This win changes the perspective quite a bit.

Very good analysis comes from Peter Gammons in his writeup--very simple, and true.

Now, do we start hating Boston? The metropolitan area now owns the baseball title and the football title. Their teams have won nearly 30 games in a row if you add the Pats' streak and the Sox' streak. Ahh...no we can't hate you, Boston, you've suffered enough. How great is this?
