What Am I Thankful For

It's Thanksgiving; no reason we can't be a little cheesy. I'm actually not doing the family thing till tomorrow, so I don't have anything to do on this blessed day off of work. So, I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and make a quick list of things I am thankful for.

- Getting married to the coolest chick on the face of the Earth a couple of months ago.

- The Predators give us at least one quality professional sports team this year

- Vandy beating U.T., and Notre Dame having a hell of a season; they could be pre-ranked number one next year

- All of my friends and family (You have to throw that one in there)

- Having a job I actually like; being involved with a quality company makes the weekdays a lot less dreadful

- My new niece that my sister was nice enough to bring into this world

- Getting to sit in the Owner's box at this Saturday's Predator's game; it pays to have connections I guess

- Winning a grand on two poker hands in Vegas this past May; that might have been the biggest rush I've ever felt in the five minutes it took to do it

- One of the best year's in music; Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Folds, Nine Inch Nails, My Morning Jacket, The Silver Jews, System of a Down, The Geto Boys, The New Pornographers, The Eels, Beck, and I'm sure there are many 2005 releases I'm missing, but these were all some of the best albums I've heard in the past five years or so

- My last year to be called a twentysomething; that's right, guys, next May I will be the big 3-0

- To finally have a string of really good movies hitting the theaters; 2005 might not be as bad a year as we predicted it would be

- having a decent fantasy football team

- And last but not least, this blog site; we're almost through with another year (I think this makes three or four, I can't remember), and it's been fun as hell

There's a ton of things I'm forgetting to mention, but I've got to make a showing of "Rent," so Happy Holidays, guys. I enjoy your company very much.

Just like Wallace & Gromit, KW likes him some cheese.

Great post! I don't think we can ever underestimate the need to reflect and recognize how fortunate we are. Here's what I'm thankful for, in usual random order (except for the first item...which is definitely the first item, hands down):

-A girlfriend who is my best friend, someone to love for the rest of my life. Searched for her for 30 years, glad I found her.
(her family deserves honorable mention, as they have accepted me as a son already).

-Friends. If I had time to tell the recent stories of my life, you'd realize how tough it is that I say that. I do have some seriously great friends, including Chris, that I am blessed to have.

-A job. That's right, KW will not likely be unemployed much longer. The job I REALLY want is still up in the air, but I have secured an excellent job with what I'm calling a fallback company. It pays more than my last job and has excellent benefits.

-The Preds. They have really given me something to hang on to. They are 14-3-3 a quarter of the way through the season. Even in seasons past, they've been a constant source of joy and excitement for me, which is more than I can say for the Titans.

-The Colts. Having a banner season. The team I've loved for almost two decades is finally good enough to win it all. Even if they don't win it all, they've made it awful easy this year for me to be proud to be a fan. Really anxious for Monday night's game with the Steelers.

-Good movies. Finally we have some great films coming out (Wallace & Gromit, Harry Potter, Pride & Prejudice were awesome...) and more to come (King Kong, Narnia, & Munich all look sure-fire). There's been more crap this year than usual, and it's nice to see some great product coming out to redeem the film medium.

-My family. My parents are awesome (supportive, loving, kind, and full of wisdom) and my brother is my second best friend (only usurped in the top spot by my gal). My nephew has changed me from someone who doesn't like kids to someone who "oohs" and "awwws" at every kid I see...he is the coolest 2-year-old ever.

-My health. I don't currently have any major health issues or disabilities, and I easily could. Can't take it for granted...I'm fortunate to be healthy at 30.

-Blogs. This blog has provided me so much: a place to rant and rave, a place to journal, a place to connect with like-minded individuals, and a place to post my thoughts for the world to see. Just awesome. Thanks for welcoming me.

-Freedoms. (WARNING, this listing contains extra cheese.) To think that there are places in this world where I would be punished and scorned for sharing my views...it's just mind-boggling. I take my freedoms for granted every day.

-Our troops. Don't you dare call me cheesy on this one. Those men and women in the armed services make our freedoms possible--even when we're not at war. They put their lives on the line (which I'm much too chicken to do) to make it possible for me to even wax poetic about freedoms and libery. My cousin is back in Iraq, and that has personalized the soldier's sacrifice for me in a major way. Come home soon, Chris (my cousin, not the L&N Chris).

-My faith. I know everyone doesn't share it, and I wouldn't dream of forcing on anyone...but I do believe that everything I have comes from God, and I am eternally thankful.

-Turkey. Man, do I love left-over turkey. I could eat it for days...and I will. Yum.

There you go. Thanksgiving is not merely family and food...it is about taking stock in your life, and realizing how little you have that is of your own doing.

This is late but I'm thankful to be basically moved out of my noisy apartment (still some minor stuff left). I like food, too. And living. And my family. Don't know if my niece and nephew make me appreciate kids more, but I'm sure they'll be cool people someday. Love the Preds' goodness.

I am thankful for many things, and I definitely take it for granted--my life is a hundred times better than some. But, I do hope for better in the coming years.
