Nashville Football Notes

You know, I should probably write something for the blog! I just haven't gotten around to it lately. Here are a few things that I've been thinking:

-What a great win by Vandy. I have no doubt that they were the better team. I've always said that I cheer for the team with the most to gain in this game, and this year it was finally Vandy. As disappointed as we are about them not making a bowl, I'd rather have that win against UT, on the road.

-Cutler has proven he is a winner. He might not have the talent around him to take every game, but on more than one occasion this year he has led a drive in the final minutes that either won the game, or gave his team the chance. Against UT he pulled it out, of course. Against Florida, he led two drives to score two TDs, and had another one in OT. Against MTSU, he drove the team into FG range, even though it was blocked. Against Ole Miss, he drove for the game winning TD. And I feel like I'm missing one or two. A player who can keep his head at the end of a game and drive the length of the field is valuable at any level. If I'm an NFL team who doesn't have two strong QBs, I'm taking a serious look at Cutler.

-So many of us were worried that fans wouldn't show up to see the Titans if they had a bad year. Well, here's the bad year, and the sell-outs keep coming. I know that Ebay ticket selling is going just fine as well, even though the selling price is a bit lower. If they have a couple of more like this, we'll see how the fans are, but the showing has been fine for now. I'm no longer worried about the Titans fan base.

-The Titans, though, I'm plenty worried about. The good thing about having a Steeler fan roommate is that I usually end up at a sports bar, where I don't have to watch every play. I don't like the atmosphere of losing that has taken over, as they don't seem to have that push they used to. A younger McNair, I believe, wins at least three games that they didn't, but they don't have that anymore. They need someone to push them further, a proven winner. Cutler, perhaps?

-That last touchdown from Leftwich; didn't he throw it past the line of scrimmage? Shouldn't that have been reviewed? How did the officials miss that? Or am I nuts?

No, Mike, you are not nuts at all. I was sitting there going, the dude went over the line of scrimmage! No one is talking about this! Someone throw a red flag! Of course, our rent-an-announcers weren't making any fuss, either.

Yeah, seemed like I was outside of myself rooting for Vandy in that UT game. I even felt the pang of impending loss when UT drove down the field and had shots at the end zone. And, the Vandy win sheds light on a negative: They should have been 7-4 this year.

I was at the Titans game, and most of the people around me were saying the same thing about him being over the line of scrimmage. I just don't think that's a call that they ever initiate, because I've seen it happen plenty of times and not get a flag. Doesn't make it right though.
