Movie Releases, 2/3

It's a light week for movies this Friday, but there's still room for a remake.

Auteur Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider, The General's Daughter) directs the remake to the 1979 babysitting horror flick When A Stranger Calls. Cutie Camilla Belle takes over the Carol Kane role.

Focus Features, which has been on a roll, issues their second "illicit" romance movie within months of each other after Brokeback Mountain, the interracial comedy/drama Something New. Advance word from a guy at work who's seen it says it's good. We'll see.

And what is up with giving away the damn surprise in "When a Stranger Calls" previews. I realize a lot of us out there have seen the original, but for the youngsters who have never heard of it that would have been a pretty cool twist for them. I mean the movie will probably suck ass, which after the first twenty minutes the original does as well. But still, what a god awful thing to do in the trailer.
