Movie Releases, 1/27

This week, January finally gets a movie that will likely sweep the next year's Oscars. That's right, the movie is Big Momma's House 2. Martin Lawrence aims for the Oscar he was shamefully shut out from in 2000 with the reprisal of his undercover cop granny role from 6 years ago. Oscar clip will feature Lawrence, in full granny outfit, pointing to hot girl's supposedly exposed breasts that is featured in every trailer.

Now, now. I know what the potential attack on me for this is. Chris, movies don't all have to be going for the Oscar. Boy, I couldn't agree with you more. But they should at least be original. Or try.

Speaking of not original, how about James Franco's 2nd January film after Tristan & Isolde, the military-training escapades of Annapolis. Justin Lin, who did the very good Better Luck Tomorrow, directs this all-seems-very-familiar movie.

Finally, actors I thought I'd never see in a January release, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson, appear in the latest kids-go-crazy-and-learn-lessons flick, Nanny McPhee. Thompson wrote the screenplay based on Christianna Brand's "Nurse Matilda" books. This actually looks OK, certainly better than movies like The Pacifier, Yours, Mine, & Ours, and Cheaper by the Dozen 2, but you gotta' worry about the release date.

If any other releases I'm not aware of show up, I'll update the post.
