Gulp...

I've been heartened by reports that Hurricane Rita, upgraded today, is headed to Texas. But, here's an NIU professor that says the latest updates could show it directed towards New Orleans.

Mike,

It doesn't look good. But the one thing I learned from family members that live in hurricane country is if someone wants to ride it out you can't force them out. From what I saw on the Today show this morning, the people coming back to New Orleans were those who were not affected as badly (i.e. they lived in the higher sections of New Orleans) and presumably, have the means to take care of themselves. I cannot imagine being told I could not go back home , etc. It is a horrible situation that has no real quick fix. I have said it before though, the politicos on both sides have made mistakes and what do the countries think? The ones we try to go into and show them the "better" way to run their countries. A lesson that I learned years ago but was reiterated in my first grad school class is that everyone gets from point A to point B differently. I hope that as a country, tolerence and differences will be the lessons learned. I also hope that this outpouring of help will carry over to our everyday lives.
I chose not to give to the Red Cross because I actually knew someone (actually a former co-worker's family) that had been affected. Her 20 year old niece was pregnant at the time of Katrina. I sent money to Tami for any baby needs her niece may have. I am happy to report that mother and baby are doing well and that they were so overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers furing this crisis.
FYI, I saw on Oprah yesterday that she has a "house registry" on her Angel Network. Anyone can go onto this site and purchase items for a house (picture frames up to an actual house). And she is one of the many celebrities that is putting her money where her mouth is; she has donated 10 millon dollars that will be earmarked for the building of new homes.
I think I am going to look into volunteering for Habitat for Hummanity. I don't have the money to donate, but I could at least help build if that is a possibility. Okay, I will stop rambling. . .

The later tracks for this storm suggest it taking a more westerly course. One of the National Hurricane Center maps suggests it might follow the path of the canonical panhandle hook snowstorm from Texas to the Lakes.
