Big Bruce Finally Gets IN

After 13 years on the ballot, Bruce Sutter finally got inducted into the Hall of Fame today; baseball for those not in the know. He pitched for 2 L&N Veteran's teams (Cubs and Braves), and he also pitched for the Cardinals, but we don't have to mention those dark days. And good for him.

But what really got me was looking at the ballot for the first time in awhile and seeing all of the people that we grew up loving the hell out of that still aren't in. Andre Dawson and Bert Byleven are two blaring omissions. But there's also Will Clark, Don Mattingly, Dave Parker, Lee Smith, Willie McGee, etc.

Maybe as a child I just really didn't know enough about the stats and what not, but for pure nostalgia sake, and just the joy I got out of watching these guys play, and they were superstars of their day; it kills me to think they might never be in the hall of fame.

Especially Dawson, who as a long time Cubs fan it's just a heartbreak. I can remember fondly watching him in the on-deck circle with ice bags on his knees. He'd take them off, step up to the plate, and crack a homer. Maybe that doesn't make him Hall of Fame worthy, but I would think all of his amazing stats would, and no steroid scare in the mix. Here's to next year, Dawson; you gotta make it one of these days.

Here's some stats to support Dawson getting in.

An 8 time All-Star, ranging from 1981 to 1991. I'd say that's longevity.

Over 21 seasons, Dawson totaled:

438 home runs - not Hall material alone, but in elite company.

503 doubles - nothing to shake a stick at.

314 stolen bases - now this is what puts Andre in the hall of fame. To my knowledge, I believe he was the only player at the time to total 400+ homers and 300+ stolen bases.

It's disgusting how elitist the baseball administration is, and it detracts from the love of the game. Here's hoping the Cubbies can climb out of the cellar this year. We don't want to get beat by the Brewers again.
