Movie Releases, 6/28 and 30

Superman Returns, likely to be the biggest movie of the summer, if not the year, opens on Wednesday. There are a lot of interesting choices swirling around in this movie. For instance, this new Superman acknowledges that the first two Superman films exist. So this is both a reinvention and a continuation--We'll do the Nintendo thing and call it Super Superman III. This also reteams director Bryan Singer with his Usual Suspects star Kevin Spacey, here playing Lex Luthor in what appears to be the meatiest role Spacey has had in awhile. Brandon Routh, despite his too-youthful looks, is the same age as Christopher Reeve was back in the 1978 original. We're also going to get some reincarnation of Marlon Brando here, "reprising" his Jor-El role through archival footage. And he'll probably still make a million or so off of it, even though he's dead now. At first what appeared to be a marketing disaster with the first trailer (which I myself liked) has turned into a marketing juggernaut--this will be the movie to beat.

And as probably quite brilliant counterprogramming, Fox releases their adaptation of the mega-bestseller The Devil Wears Prada on Friday. Meryl Streep plays the Oscar-bait role of Miranda Priestly, a New York fashion magazine editor who takes a young naif (Anne Hathaway) as her secretary and does horrible, evil psychological damage to her...but in a funny way! So the gals have something to go to this weekend while the boys dress up in tights and bring action figures to the theatre. They'll take separate cars, I'm thinking.

Am I the only one that thinks "Devil Wears Prada" is "Swimming With Sharks" for ladies.? Maybe because that movie wasn't a huge smash it hasn't been mentioned in the same breath, but based on a novel or not this seems like pretty much the same thing.

Damn, Jonny, we're on the exact same wavelength. I was going to include that reference in my review of it. I've been thinking about that movie a lot recently (and have watched it recently) and wondered where the hell director George Huang went.

He directed a really bad movie with Jennifer Love Hewitt in it; I don't remember the name off the top of my head, but I do remember that it sucked. He was also in an article I read a couple years ago in Premeire about gifted directors that went nowhere after their intriguing debut.

Yeah, that movie was TROJAN WAR, but that was way back in 1997--then he did a couple of things for TV and the last thing was in 2001.
