Football Notes

How ironic would it be if we lose Eddie, a workhorse, and keep a potentially better back with cronic injuries? How frustrating it was to see Smith playing in the second half after 100 Brown yards, and not knowing why! I'm glad we have Smith, though, who's probably still better than Eddie these days.

How much can we read off the first Titans game? WIth the usual opening day rust, and the thoughts of a freaking hurricane in the back of everyone's mind, I think the Dolphins get a mulligan. Also, McNair has a few games with low passing each year, and it usually doesn't matter. This is why he can play on my team any time, but never on my fantasy team.

Watching the Bengals-Jets game early on, and the Jets look good. Palmer's done decently, and he certainly has NFL caliber skills, but he's thrown into double coverage a couple of times. Don't forget that success came under Kitna last year, not Palmer. I think it's next year for him and this team. Also, the O-line has allowed a lot of penetration. On the other side, Pennington looks good, but a bit rusty. We'll see how the game ends up.

And, for some horrible reason, the other game this morning is Lions-Bears. Why? Louisville isn't all THAT close to Chicago, and I can't think of any other reason to show this one.

In college football, I'm mad at Marshall today. They were tied at 21, moving down the field at will with about 6 minutes left. Then they decide, stupidly, to go on clock killing mode and settle for the field goal. Awful. So, with 3 minutes to play, they attempt and miss a field goal from 40 yards or so. I think if they'd stayed the course they could have at least gotten closer for an easier FG attempt, if not a TD. Then, with under two minutes left they get the ball back again, and decide to kill the clock and go to OT. Problem? They can't kill the entire clock. Ohio State calls a timeout, gets the ball back, and kicks an amazing 54 yard FG to win with :00 on the clock. I HATE watching a team lose due to bad coaching decisions, especially an upset bid. The Marshall players deserved better.

The upsets yesterday were interesting in that some of them weren't flukes. Fresno State won huge over Kansas State, and Southern Miss beat Nebraska, most likely because they are the better team. But, Indiana had no business beating Oregon, and the stats show that, if not the final score. They'll proceed to suck shortly.
